How To Practice Self-Care When You Are A Mom

Things change so much once you become a mom. Your life revolves around your child or children and that will never change. I know personally, it can seem like you lose a part of yourself once you become a mom. You suddenly start worrying less about the latest fashion trends and more about doctor’s appointments, feedings, and keeping a baby alive. It becomes hard to practice any self-care at all! In this post, I am going to give you some ideas on how to practice self-care when you are a mom.

It took me a while to even realize that some of the things I had once truly loved, I no longer participated in. I felt like I had no free time no matter how much I tried to schedule it out. If you work a full-time job, parenting is HARD. If you stay at home, parenting is HARD. I think, either way, it is the exact same amount of HARD. I almost feel lucky some days to have a job because it gives me a break from the constant chaos of being at home. So no matter what type of mom you are, I totally feel ya!

When things get crazy and chaotic we can always use a little self-care time to bring us back to our old selves, our pre-baby, pre-kids self. So, here are a few ideas on how to practice self-care when you are a mom!

20 Ideas to Practice Self-Care When Your A Mom:

Try a Face Mask/Paint Your Nails

I always feel better after a good face mask! If you have the time, you can do a quick face mask and while it is drying you can paint your nails/toes. I always feel more put together seeing color on my nails for some reason. Ha! It’s a great way to relax while also showing yourself some self-care!

Light Your Favorite Candles

Anyone else have an obsession with Bath & Body Works candles? No? Just me? Ok. I have literally so many of these candles. (We won’t even get into the number of hand soaps under my sink) One of my favorite things to do is light a few candles of my favorite scent throughout the whole house. I always wait until Liam takes a nap to make sure that he can not get into the candles and hurt himself.

Take A Walk Outside/Go To A Park

This is a great idea if your kid is refusing to take a nap or is getting a little too crazy indoors. It always makes me feel so much better just to take a walk outside. Sometimes, we just go out into our neighborhood and walk around. I also make use of the school playgrounds near us when Liam has tons of energy. I just throw on some workout clothes, put my hair up, and run out the door! It feels good to feel fresh air when you have been inside all day.

Plan A Vacation

Ok, this might sound weird but I truly enjoy planning vacations and travel plans! I love love love researching different places to travel and looking up reviews, etc. I plan every single vacation we have and if there is ever a time that I am bored I love to look at pricing for hotels we are interested in or even cruises. I like to be frugal so I try to find the best deals for our family! I just feel so accomplished when I book something for cheaper than normal.

Cook Your Favorite Meal or Dessert

I am not the biggest cook, but this is a great option if you like to cook! You can make your favorite lunch or dinner recipe. You can also make a fabulous dessert to decorate and share with your family later on in the day.

Listen To Music/Podcast

My favorite thing when I am kid-free is to put in my earphones and play my favorite music. Obviously, my day to day playlist features Little Baby Bum and CoCoMelon tunes for my toddler, but when he is asleep I finally get to listen to my own soundtrack! I love listening to singer/songwriter music to relax and unwind. It pairs great with a glass (or two) of your favorite wine!

Put On Your Favorite Outfit

This should have been my number one suggestion because once you actually change out of your pajamas and into a normal person outfit you instantly feel 98% better! Ha! You can’t tell me that it is not the truth!

Put On Your Favorite Makeup

This is another great suggestion because I always feel better after doing my makeup even if it is just throwing on some foundation and bronzer.

Blow-Dry and Style Your Hair

Hey if we put getting dressed in your favorite outfit and putting on your favorite makeup, then why would we leave out styling your hair? You can be totally put together (which is an extremely rare instance for me!)

Pinteresting

Pinterest is a great tool to use when you need information on pretty much anything. I love to look for ideas on how to organize my house, styling new outfits, new makeup looks, etc. I can sit on Pinterest for hours and pin things to boards that I will probably never do, but in some ways it makes me feel more put together (anyone else this way?!) I have no clue why, but I love having a very organized Pinterest to where I can look through my ideas and hopefully one day accomplish some of those ideas. If you have not followed me on Pinterest yet, you should do that now!

Diffuse Your Favorite Essential Oils

I love my essential oils. I have many different diffusers throughout the house. My favorite essential oil is Eucalyptus. It is extremely relaxing and makes the house smell so good! I love to turn on my diffuser anytime I need to take a break.

Go Buy Yourself A Coffee

Coffee. One of my favorite things. Starbucks. Also one of my favorite things. If you ever need a quick break and you have a Starbucks near you, it is great to run through the drive-through and grab your favorite coffee or tea. I love Starbucks anytime during the day. Their cold brew coffees are a great pick-me-up to get you through the afternoon slump (and dinner, bedtime routines, and meltdowns. Ha!) If you need suggestions on the best Starbucks drinks, check out their menu.

Take A Nap

The holy grail of all self-care. If you can take a nap, TAKE IT!

Make A Vision Board

This is a great way to spend some free time. You can make a vision board of everything you are working towards whether it be in your career, your family, etc. You can make a vision board at home out of a large board and construction paper and stickers or you make one online if your design-savvy! It’s a great way to realize some of your goals and the potential you have to reach them!

Declutter An Area Of Your House

De-cluttering or cleaning is a great way to relieve stress and make you feel better. I love to de-clutter a small area when I have the time because it makes me feel like I have accomplished something (even if it was a small thing!) and another perk is that your house is a little bit cleaner too! It’s easy if you focus on just one small area like your vanity or bathroom sink and just clear and organize all the products.

Exercise

Exercise is always good for you! Even if you just do a quick stretch or yoga session I promise you will start to feel better within a few minutes. Afterward, you will be so proud that you completed a workout!

Plan A Date Night

It is always great to have something to look forward too. If you are able to, you can plan a date night out with your husband (without the kids!) You have most of the day to plan an outing and you can make it a surprise for your significant other!

Plan A Night Out With Friends

Like above, you can try to plan a fun night out with friends. It gives you something to look forward too and you can plan a great outfit too!

Take A Detox Bath

I love to take a bath when I have free time. I love to use Eucalyptus bath salts to soak in. This helps with any body aches and pains and it also helps relieve stress. Taking a bath is probably one of my favorite self-care methods, ever!

Write 10 Things You Are Grateful For/Look Up Positive Affirmations

If you are really feeling down, you should think about things that you are grateful for. I know when I start to think about it I feel pretty lucky to have the things that I have, including my family. You can write these down in a journal or even use your phone. It gives you something to look back on if you ever feel alone or unhappy. I also included some positive affirmations for moms’ graphic above. Feel free to use that as well.
