How To Be A Successful Stay At Home Mom

Create Structure In Your Day

Almost everyone needs structure during their day, including stay-at-home moms! Your life will become much easier when you have a schedule that allows you to structure out your day to work the best for you. Think about what is most important to you and make that a priority every day.

Have Outside Time Every Day

Get outside! You don’t have to leave your house every single day, but at least go outside. I have 3 days out of 4 that my husband works that we have outside time (as in leaving the house). The other day we might stay at home all day but we are spending time on the front porch or playing out back on the trampoline. It always feels great to get outside when you are stuck in the house most of the day.

Plan Ahead

I know it sounds a little crazy to say to plan your days ahead of time when you probably wanted to get away from that part of the corporate work world, but it will make your life so much easier! I try to plan my week in advance to ensure I get everything I needed to be done and also to schedule out a little “me” time as well. You can plan outings with the kids ahead of time and it will help you get more done.

Make Lists/Be Organized

A great way to make stay-at-home mom life successful is to make lists and be more organized. I use a lot of lists to try and stay organized throughout the day. I use a paper planner I write in, my iPhone calendar, and the reminder and notes app on my phone to keep up with everything.

Stop Trying To Do It All

I really really suffered from this when I first started my stay-at-home-mom life. I felt like I absolutely HAD to do it all. Like, I was staying at home all day so why couldn’t I? Let me tell you, I was SO wrong. It’s impossible to do it all every single day and not have a mental breakdown.

You really need to prioritize what needs to be done and when. You can even start a list of chores, appointments, etc. that will happen periodically throughout the week or month and make sure you schedule it all out. This way you aren’t trying to do everything in one day and overwhelming yourself.

Find Other Outlets During The Day

You will need to and want to find other outlets during the day. You can pick up a new hobby or pursue an old one. Some great things to try out would be exercising, running, painting, drawing, reading, etc. Anything that can help you get your mind off of your day and actually let you relax for a few minutes is perfect!

Plan Things That Make You Happy

Even though you are planning your day full of events for your children, make sure you plan things that make your own self happy too! Obviously, there are some things that are no-brainers and you just have to accept with children but if you can plan things to make your life a little easier and still keep the children happy then why not?

A great example of this is if you hate to stay out late and it makes you anxious thinking about bedtime, always schedule your playdates and errands early in the day if possible. If you are back home at a decent hour, you have less stress on yourself and feel like you can manage your day easier.

If you always plan things running late into the evening, then you are setting yourself up for disaster. It’s fine to do it every now and then (when you are mentally prepared haha!) but for the most part, try to plan things to make yourself happy and make your life easier!

Plan Time Away From Your Children

This is a super important one to ensure you are a successful stay-at-home mom! You always need to plan time away from your children. You can do whatever you are comfortable with. Some people like to go out alone for an hour and come right back. Some go out all day and come back at night. Other people take vacations and get a break.

There is no wrong way here. You do what’s best for you and your family but I recommend at least a few hours a week to yourself so you can do other things that you can’t really do with children like shopping for fun, nail appointments, hair appointments, spa days, etc.

Plan something nice for yourself every once in a while because you deserve it!

Try To Get Ready Each Morning

My last tip on how to be a successful stay-at-home mom is to try and get ready every morning. It doesn’t have to be a full face of makeup and dressy clothes ready, but at least take a shower and put on something other than pajamas. I feel like my best days are when I actually felt productive and those are the days when I managed to at least get out of pajamas and put regular clothes on.

You can even buy cheap sets of loungewear just to wear around the house and it will make you feel so much more put together! Don’t get me wrong, I still have a lot of days that I end up in my pajamas at 5 pm and I think wow, where did my day go? But if I wake up with the intention to make myself a priority by getting ready in the morning, I always have the best and most productive days!
